Programme Director - Bob Westrip

Bob Westrip has over 30 years experience in retail banking with Barclays having started at a junior level to Local Director level from 1967-2000. A chartered banker, his experience included all roles in southeast UK regional unit up to Director, including Head of Corporate Business and Deputy Risk Management Director and has also included a move to Barclays central headquarters, London, where he dealt with the large corporate market working with companies such as British Steel, Pilkingtons, Hawker Siddeley, etc. providing them with all banking facilities and related business for their global businesses.

During the 1990’s economic downturn Bob dealt with the major reconstruction of companies in financial crisis including leading the largest reconstruction achieved at that time in the UK, Queens Moat Houses PLC. Despite the environment, he succeeded in saving all but one of the businesses where he was involved. Critically, Bob also interfaced with UK national press and radio media during this period. He later reorganised the risk function for another Barclays’ regional business unit changing the culture from one where they looked to decline an application to one where they looked creatively at how it could be structured so that it could be sanctioned. His last challenge at Barclays was to reinvigorate a Corporate Business Team in southeast UK, resulting in raising their profile and developing both the team members and the business.

Since 2000 Bob has transferred his retail banking knowledge, experience and practical know-how as both a lecturer at a leading European training college and advisor to the British government as a National Business Link Advisor and to the business community at various levels, from start-ups to those gearing up. He is a mentor to the UK Prince’s Trust since 2003, Fit4Finance Programme and Finance4Social Enterprise Programme, and as such is keenly aware that a dedication to personal and career development impacts directly on larger business goals.
